This book is a very powerful read about a girl called Hannah Rosenthal, stuck in the midst of the second world war. Hannah and her best friend Leo and their families attempt to escape Germany for Cuba in the hope of a better life there.

What makes this book so engaging is the comparison of current day life to the life that Hannah went through/5(). The German is extremely well-written and thought-provoking.

It deserves all of the accolades it has received. Thomas does an excellent job of showing how people's fear of the unknown clouds their judgment to, sometimes, tragic proportions.

The book does move at a very slow pace, however, so be prepared/5(30).
