Elias Ashmole was a prominent English antiquary, politician, officer of arms, astrologer, and student of alchemy. He is famous for being the founder of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford having donated to the University of Oxford in his collections of books, manuscripts, and artefacts. He is also regarded for being a founding Fellow of the Royal Society. Elias Ashmole, an English alchemist during the late Renaissance wrote about the Philosopher’s Stone in the Theatrum Chemicum Britannicum Prolegomena (), and is described as a “Lightning Stone”, a meteorite-like stone fallen from the sky, or the “Angelic Stone” as he called it: Lastly, as touching the Angelical Stone, it is so subtle, said the aforesaid author, that it can neither.
